Kenyan Engineering students develop a solution for Kenya’s hair and beauty industry

Often, women have to travel long distances and wait in queues to get their hair or nails done despite their busy schedules, a process that is exhausting and sometimes hampers their productivity at work.

This dilemma, coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic causing many salons to shut down owing to reduced customer traffic, inspired 3 Kenyan youths to create a mobile app that links customers directly to stylists at the comfort of their homes.

Co-founders Mercy Kiptui, Yvonne Elabonga, and Victor Mungai are Kenyan engineering students who created the service-oriented app “Nywele Nyumbani”, a lifestyle solution for women to book beauty services online and be attended to in the comfort of their homes.

The app automatically matches customers with stylists that best suit their individual needs and preferences and enables clients to provide feedback on the services received. By enhancing customers’ comfort and minimizing startup costs for youth and women stylists, the “Nywele Nyumbani” app serves as a two-way solution for both customers and clients.
